The 12th China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT) in September will feature more participants and encourage partnerships among foreign and domestic companies, according to government officials in the host city of Xiamen, Fujian province. The fair is the country's top international investment promotion event. It's sponsored bythe Ministry of Commerce and is aimed at investment cooperation.
Xiamen Mayor Liu Cigui said on Friday that the fair venue will be twice as big (60,000 sq m) as in previous years. The number of exhibition booths will also be increased, from 1,500 to 2,500.
He said that the fair used to be simply a platform for attracting foreign investments, "but now it is more than just that".
"It also helps Chinese companies explore the global market and find potential business partners overseas," he said.
And the fair organizers are trying to make the meetings more productive this year, Liu said.
Zheng Kunsheng, deputy director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong, believes that this year's CIFIT will lead to better pairings of companies, as well as enhance partnerships between the mainland and Hong Kong. A total of 41 countries will be represented among the display booths, and visitors from more than 70 countries are expected to attend. In recent years, more and more countries and regions represented by governmental and non-governmental institutions have flocked to CIFIT - setting up booths and holding investment briefings and seminars, the CIFIT's organizing committee said in a statement.
This year's CIFIT is expected to boost cross-Strait business ties, as Xiamen is just across the Straits from Taiwan.
Xiamen's trade and commerce sector grew significantly last year. Foreign trade there reached nearly USD40 billion - a year-on-year increase of 21 percent. Exports were up by almost 25 percent to USD25.55 billion, and imports grew by 15 percent to over 36 billion yuan.
